Homework Hero is a South African service that helps parents and caregivers teach Grades 4-9 homework aligned to the CAPS curriculum. It is operated by Link Nova.
Why this exists
There is no shortage of tools that will answer a child's homework question. They are very good at it, and that is the problem. A child who photographs a worksheet and copies the result has finished the task and learned nothing, and the adult in the room has been made irrelevant.
Meanwhile the caregiver who wants to help is often stuck. They may have been taught long division a different way. They may not have completed school themselves. They may simply not remember what a numerator is. Wanting to help and not knowing how is an uncomfortable place to sit, and most people resolve it by stepping back.
Homework Hero is aimed squarely at that adult. It explains the concept in plain language, hands over the exact words to say, gives one good question to ask, describes what a correct answer sounds like, and holds three hints in reserve. The final answer stays out of the message on purpose.
How we think about correctness
Being confidently wrong about a Grade 7 maths method is worse than being unavailable. Where a question is ambiguous or a photograph is unclear, the service lowers its confidence and asks the parent to confirm rather than guessing. Low-confidence responses are flagged for human review.
We are not endorsed by, affiliated with, or speaking on behalf of the Department of Basic Education. We reference the official CAPS documents as published policy sources, and we say so on every coaching card.
How we think about children's data
The guardian owns the account. There is no direct learner login. We do not ask for a surname, a school, a date of birth, or an identity number, because we do not need them to help with a fractions question.
Homework text and photographs are processed to produce the reply and are not retained afterwards. What we keep is deliberately boring: a protected account identifier, the learner's grade, and how much of your allowance you have used. Full detail is in our privacy policy.
